JD(S) firmly with 3rd front: Gowda

Spiking rumours that the Janata Dal (Secular) would 'ditch' the third front to join the UPA, party supremo H D Deve Gowda today said the party was firmly in the third front and not too much should be read into yesterday's meeting between Congress President Sonia Gandhi and his son H D Kumaraswamy.

Speaking to reporters at his residence here, Mr Gowda said the JD(S) was a part and parcel of the third front and there was no question of it leaving the group.

The Kumaraswamy-Sonia meeting yesterday had led to speculations that the Karnataka-based party would 'ditch' the third front and go the TRS way, after the Andhra Pradesh-based party's President K Chandrasekhar Rao had attended an NDA rally in Punjab early this week.'

'The JD(S) has an important role to play in the third front.

Government formation in Delhi will not be possible this time without the participation of the third front. As a former Prime Minister, I will not indulge in speculation over the post-election understandings. Please wait till the results are out,'' he said.

When insisted why Mr Kumaraswamy had met the Congress President at this time, Mr Gowda claimed that ''he met Ms Gandhi to tell her that JD(S) is very much a part of the third front and nothing else.

Please don't read too much into this meeting.'' He said the BJP Government was 'torturing' his son over political issues and Mr Kumaraswamy had briefed Ms Gandhi on that, besides discussing State issues. ''There was no talk on national politics.

He merely discussed State issues. Such meetings have happened before. Even I have met Ms Gandhi some time ago,'' he said.

To a question, he said he would neither be the king or kingmaker in the post-poll scenario.
