Nandamuri Bala Chandrudu is 50 years young

Balakrishna is a multi-faceted personality. Apart from being a proven commercial mass hero, he is a keen follower of classical dance, loves poetry and like his father has a healthy fascination for the puranas. Like any son of a famous father he had his early moments of intense struggle in living up to the expectations of his titanic father – the late NTR. To his credit Balayya (as he is affectionately called) realized he is not , and never will be, his father. He quickly changed tracks to a mass action hero and revelled in movies with a faction back ground. Most of his hits like Samarasimha Reddy and Lakshmi Narasimha came from the violence-filled action genre. But to date he is the only hero in Tollywood who looks apt in the mythological genre too. Films apart, Balakrishna in the not too recent past hit the headlines for the wrong reason. The infamous shooting incident involving Bellamkonda Suresh comes to one’s mind. A much maligned Balayya survived thanks to the solid support of his family particularly (his now sambandhi) Chandrababu and (his sister) Purandareswari. Balakrishna on his part maintains he did that merely as a gesture to boost the morale of the local TDP candidate. Today at the autumn of his career, Balakrishna is looked upon as one of the handful of men who can save his father’s party, the TDP, from drifting into obscurity. This perhaps would be his real test as a hero. The age of 50 can be described as the right age for the politician in him to take centre stage.
