BJP ready to sit in opposition in Orissa, targets 2014 polls

Though it enjoyed power in a coalition government in Orissa for over nine-years along with BJD, the BJP was ready to sit in opposition this time while eyeing the next assembly elections in 2014.

This was stated by BJP's senior leader B B Harichandan. "We are ready to sit in opposition this time," Harichandan told reporters adding that the party would respect the verdict of people instead of aspiring to be part of the government this time.

Stating that the party has decided to target the 2014 assembly elections, Harichandan said the BJP would certainly grow on its own strength in coming days.

"The BJP will like to emerge as the only non-Congress party in Orissa during the 2014 elections," he said.

The BJP whose 11-year-old electoral alliance with the BJD headed by Naveen Patnaik came to an end before the elections in March, had fielded candidates in all the 147 assembly segments and 21 parliament constituencies this time.

While many saffron leaders unofficially admitted that the party would not be able to get 32 seats as in 2004 polls, they expect maximum of 20 seats in the recently concluded elections.

However, BJP will play a crucial role in defeating BJD candidates in many seats thus indirectly benefiting the Congress, political observers opined.
