A record number of 2,727 Assembly candidates lost their deposits as they failed to get the minimum of one-sixth of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies.
The money lost by these candidates at the rate of Rs. 5,000 each will go to the Election Commission. The total amount paid them towards deposit is around Rs. 1.3 crore.
The Congress and the Telugu Desam fielded 294 and 224 candidates respectively but none of them forfeited their deposits, as they succeeded in polling the minimum number of votes.
On the other hand, three candidates of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which fielded 45 candidates, lost their deposits. The Praja Rajyam Party candidates lost deposits in 42 out of the 289 constituencies where they contested.
This also happened in case of 239 out of the 271 contestants of the BJP.
The BSP topped the list as 265 out of its 268 nominees lost their deposits. Four out of 18 contestants of the CPM (M) and one out of the 14 CPI nominees suffered a similar fate.
Candidates of the Lok Satta Party, which received only 1.75 per cent of the votes in the Assembly polls, lost deposits in 230 out of 246 constituencies.
The Pyramid Party of India, which fields candidates in every election, emerged as the biggest loser as it lost deposits in all the 188 constituencies.
