The government would declare Nagpur as the country's first city where a part of power demand will be met through renewable sources of energy like solar energy under a programme, which would be unveiled tomorrow.
"Nagpur in Maharashtra would be the first solar city in the country, under a programme of development of solar cities being launched tomorrow," an official statement said.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) proposed to develop 60 such cities during the current Plan period (2007-12). At least one city in each state to a maximum of five cities in a state will be supported by MNRE, it said.
Nagpur will become model solar city by 2012 under the scheme. Up to 10 per cent of the city's power consumption is targeted to be met through renewable energy efficiency measures.
Financial support up to a maximum of Rs 9.50 crore will be made available to each of the model cities, which would be developed to set an example for others to follow.
