Following the poll debacle, the Telugu Desam Party might well want to keep itself away from the Telangana statehood matter, but the issue might come back to haunt the party as, its electoral ally, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, is likely to put pressure on it to raise its voice over the issue in the house.
The TRS is already ready with its pressure tactics, to be applied right from the first session of the Assembly and during the Governor’s joint address to both the houses.While any positive mention about the T-state in the Governor’s speech is likely to keep the TRS restrained, ommission of the issue or any adverse remarks can draw a sharp reaction from the party in the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s speech.After the electoral reverses, the TRS is desperate to bring T-issue back to the centrestage so that the party can regain strength and also impress the other pressure groups in the Telangana region and keep them under its fold. To achieve this goal, however, the party does not have the required numbers in the House and it is precisely here the predicament for the TDP starts.In lieu of its support to the TDP on the floor of the house, the TR S might seek TD’s backing on the T-issue in the Assembly.On the other hand, there is also internal pressure that the Telugu Desam Party should adopt a pro-Telangana stand, especially from Telangana region leaders like E Dayakar Rao.However, analysts in the party feel that a negative stand will affect the credibility of the party, especially after its pro-T stance during the elections. Further, it will also distance the TRS. As far as the party leaders opposed to the Tstate are concerned, the analysts say, the party chief can always explain to them that since he fought the elections on the T-plank, he has to abide by it.Whatever line the Telugu Desam may choose to take on Telangana issue, ahead of the first session it has become a hot topic of discussion in political circles.
