Lok Satta to launch Mission 2014 in AP

The Lok Satta Party today decided to launch `Mission 2014’ - a plan of action to capture power in the 2014 Assembly elections.

The party has come out with some clear goals after a three-day brainstorming session.

Asserting that the Lok Satta had generated tremendous enthusiasm and support for the party in sections like the elite, middle classes, youth and women in 2009 elections, party president Jayaprakash Narayan told reporters that the party, however, could not translate the goodwill it enjoyed into votes because of organisational and resource constraints.

In view of this, it was decided to restructure the organisation by overhauling membership criteria and coopting people with integrity, he said.

Narayan said the party would henceforth have three categories of members -- associate members, primary members and executive members.

The executive members would be eligible for contesting party posts. The party would confer honorary membership on opinion-makers in the society to expand its reach, he said. Associate members can join the party by paying an admission fee of Rs 2.

Primary members are those who can become members by paying Rs 25 for three years.

Pending membership drive and fresh internal elections all the elected committees now in place would become ad hoc committees and would be restructured following a detailed district-wise review, he said.

Another clearly articulated goal that emerged from the three-day session was to ensure the party’s success in the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections. According to the party’s assesment there will not be a castewise polarisation of votes unlike in the Assembly elections.

``We are confident of coming to power in the GHMC elections,’’ the Lok Satta leader said.

The reasoning being given by the party is that voters will want to elect a party that has a clear agenda to solve the civic issues.

Jayaprakash said that if elected the party will immediately devolve Rs 2 crore on each divisional committee from the Corporations resources to identify the people’s immediate needs.

The divisional committee will be elected by the people in each division. It will also persuade the State Government to make a per capita grant of Rs 1000 to each divisional committee.

The party will also bring pressure on the Government to merge the Metro Water Board and the Urban Development Authority with the Municipal Corporation for effective coordination among different authorities.
