No plans to join politics : Ganguly

Scotching speculation about his joining politics, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly today said he was "not good enough" to enter this arena as Samajwadi Party followed CPI-M in inviting him to its fold.

"It is not true. I am not good enough for politics," Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata at the end of the Bengal-Assam Ranji Trophy one-day encounter at the Eden Gardens here on being asked about the prospects of his joining politics.

Asked whether he would join the Samajwadi Party, Sourav quipped "if I have to join politics, I have my own state."

Speculation was fuelled when his wife, Dona, indicated in Allahabad that he was being wooed to fight the coming Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh.

Dona, a noted Odissi dancer, said the West Bengal government definitely wanted her husband to step into politics, while a minister in U P had invited him to contest the elections from that state. "Such offers keep coming, but Sourav has not yet decided", Dona, who was in Allahabad to perform at the 'Triveni Mahotsav' cultural festival, said.

Dona was not sure whether it was the ruling BSP which made the offer.

Asked which party wanted to offer a ticket to Sourav, Dona said "I don't remember, I think Samajwadi Party although I may be wrong. Since I am not into politics I don't exactly know the names of people in politics. But I think it was SP.

SP leader Amar Singh, however, told newsmen that "nobody from our side has officially gone to Dona Ganguly. If someone went on our behalf, I don't know about it. But if Ganguly wants to join SP, we will consider ourselves lucky.
