Andhra Pradesh stands second in the country after Maharashtra in suicidal deaths including mass or family suicides, according to the latest report of the National Crime Record Bureau.
The percentage of suicides of AP is 12.1, preceded by Maharashtra and followed by West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The National Crime Record Bureau stated that death by poisoning and hanging are the most common methods of self-killings while the major motives driving people to commit suicide are family disputes and harassment of woman by the husband.
Half of the children committing suicides are from the four states AP, Karnataka, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
“The highest number of cases of mass or family suicides were reported from Kerala followed by Andhra Pradesh. The National Crime Record Bureau recorded 34 such cases in 100 in these two states. The state government and agencies linked to women and child welfare department have to concentrate on front,” said a senior police official of the CID women’s protection cell.
The state recorded 14,882 suicides a year at the rate of 40 suicides per day. Cities such as Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are in top 11 cities in the country recording the highest number of suicides.
