TRS to launch channel by May next

The concept of regional parties is not new but having a channel exclusively focussed on political and cultural aspects of a particular region is something the TRS wants to experiment with.

According to party senior leader and former MP B Vinod Kumar, the TRS proposes to launch its own 24×7 television channel by May, 2010. The proposed channel would be a high definition channel. Vinod, who heads the project, said that the proposed channel would educate people about the importance of separate Telangana and preserve Telangana culture. Besides, the channel will also create an opportunity to farmers in dry land areas to learn about the techniques in sustaining their agricultural activities through some special programmes and educate them about natural resources in the region.

A detailed proposal will be submitted to information and broadcasting ministry by the end of this year seeking permission and the channel will go on air by May, 2010, he said".

Claiming that it will not be a regular TV channel like the one launched by others in the state, Vinod said that the new channel will be the first of its kind which will focus exclusively on Telangana issues and and people’s plight in the region. However, it is not yet clear whether it would have news bulletins or not. "This issue is yet to be decided," he said.

According to Vinod, the party decided to have its own TV channel after the Centre permitted political parties to have their channels last month.

He said TRS leaders were already engaged in tapping the experts in the area of topography, history, culture of the region and Telangana movement and other related issues. TRS president K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavita who heads the Telangana Jagruti, cultural outfit of TRS, will play an important role in collecting material and propagating Telangana culture through the channel.

Not ruling out the investments from NRI’s in the channel, Vinod said, "we are mooting two proposals– one is a private limited company with the involvement of NRIs and another, party itself launching its own channel.
