Ever since the Congress government took over power in 2004 there has been a definite increase in the number of covert and overt attempts made by Christian missionary organizations to gain some sort of foothold in the Tirupati and Tirumala regions. In 2006 there were attempts to put images of the Cross on the steps leading up to the Tirumala hill. Alert BJP activists removed them and averted a major conflict. A few days ago a Christian organization calling itself David Luois Reese Hospital set up camp in a RTC depot in Merlapaka Village near Tirumala. Local residents alerted the issue to the TTD board which in turn contacted Mr Nagaraj of the RTC and had the hospital removed from the premises. The Tirumala region off late has been a hot bed of controversy for attracting religious heads of various hues and shades. The abode of Lord Venkateswara is considered among the holiest of holy shrines in Hinduism and any attempts of other religious establishments to gain a foothold is viewed upon as a very serious transgression.
