Telugu Desam Party plans 'shadow cabinet'

A "shadow cabinet" by the Opposition to grill the ruling government. How is the idea? This is what the opposition Telugu Desan Party, headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu, is planning to form in Andhra Pradesh.
Mr Naidu says he would assign "portfolios" to select groups of MLAs who will take up issues in the Assembly and outside it.

The party will thus train a new group of senior legislators to specialize on important subjects like irrigation, finance, agriculture, power, industry, law and order, medical and health, education and revenue, among others.

Mr Naidu, who will be Leader of the Opposition, will now have to bank on seniors like Nagam Janardhan Reddy, P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, P. Keshav, Venugopala Chary, Mandava Venkateshwara Rao, Dayakar Rao, M. Narasimhulu, Revanth Reddy, Umamaheswara Rao and others.

The advantage for Mr Naidu is his party’s strength in the Assembly.

In the 2004 elections, the TDP got just 46 seats which have now been doubled to 92. The overall strength of the Opposition including PR, TRS, Left, BJP and others makes the Opposition a formidable challenge for the Congress government.

Mr Naidu asked senior leaders to focus on corruption, irrigation, agriculture, power, housing, roads, drinking water supply, and health among others and to prepare details of shortcomings to grill the government.
