A deregulated private sector has successfully created a big business out of children’s education. Consider this if you will. The annual fee that parents have to shell out for their 3-year old’s LKG education in Hyderabad is higher than the amount that is paid in professional engineering colleges. Some schools in the city charge in the range of Rs. 1.50 lacs to Rs. 1.75 lacs per annum. For an engineering course in the city the fee is approximately Rs. 65,000 even in a top-notch college. The school management dishes out ridiculous reasons like A C transport, A C Class rooms and dining halls as the reasons that will justify this fee. Anuradha Reddy a city-based educational counsellor says the parent’s lackadaisical attitude is to be blamed for this sorry state of affairs. ‘”They do not even come and inspect the campus nor talk to professional counsellors. They approach the schools as if getting an admission in them is itself a big favour”, she said. Recently parents of wards did a sit-in strike because a reputed school hiked the tuition fees by over 150%.
