TDP-MIM stand-off over Mohanty’s appointment
The Assembly witnessed a stand-off between the Telugu Desam and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) after MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi accused the TDP of supporting the appointment of A.K. Mohanty as the Director-General of Police when the election code was in force.
During the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Mr. Owaisi stated that Mr. Mohanty’s predecessor S.S.P. Yadav was shifted on the basis of a ‘motivated’ complaint by the Opposition.
The MIM leader kicked off the controversy about the role of Mr. Mohanty and former Inspector-General of Visakhapatnam range A.B. Venkateswara Rao while discussing their ‘anti-minority’ attitude. He even read out a circular issued by Mr. Mohanty expressing apprehensions that the MIM might foment trouble in the old city.
