Swiftly and silently the IT sector is shedding off its “non-billable assets”. Even as the media tries to underplay the crisis by saying that the job market is looking up, those in IT community, have a tragically different story to narrate. Even giants like Infosys are reporting reduced hiring quotients for the first ever time since they commenced operations. The media reporting they say is by and lartge inaccurate. Naresh Trivedi who recently got sacked form a call center says “they say job sector is looking up and refer to manufacturing sector jobs and provide us some obscure data.”. Naresh lost his job as a claims caller in a premier bank in Visakhapatnam. According to Ajay Chowdhury of HR 360 the situation is terrible in Tier II centers. “Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada got cleaned out” he says. He of course is referring to the over 80% layoffs of Satyam employees in the coastal town. In the city almost all call centers have reported reduction in work forces by up to 30%. When the government invited applications for Udyoga Sri (meant for class X and Xll candidates in rural areas) , there were at least 1900 applicants from the City’s IT sector! This only shows the desperation that they are currently in.
